The Differences Between Wireless and WiMAX For Business Travelers

For anyone who has had to hit the road for work-related travel, nothing is quite as urgent as knowing that there is a steady internet connection where you are going. After all, being online is a much faster and more reliable way of connecting back to the office, since you can quickly download the proper files or just check in to make sure that appointments are happening when you were expecting them to. And with the internet while traveling for business, you are also able to just have a generally superior overview of everything that you're doing. Whether it's finding a restaurant to take a client to or talking to your spouse, being online is definitely helpful if you're traveling for business.

While most hotels do have some form of wireless internet available, the fact is that certain options in connectivity are far superior to those that you might find in various boutiques and luxury hotels alike. The biggest trouble with connectivity in hotels is the fact that you have the luck of the draw when it comes to your room's placement. Because distance is a factor when referring to a simple router, sometimes a room that is of a higher quality than one on a lower floor might actually have wireless internet that doesn't work as well, simply because the router signal does not carry that far. And this can mean spending a lot of time figuring out where in the room your laptop picks up a signal, which definitely takes away from the time you could be spending on work or getting in touch with people back home.

That's why knowing about WiMAX and using it as an option makes so much more sense than relying on the free Wi-Fi service around the country. The differences between typical wireless and this new form of wireless are incredibly varied in nature, and are a lot simpler to grasp than you might think. The best way to understand it is to think about the limited power of your Wi-Fi network versus the long-distance capabilities of WiMAX. When you are connected to a network that depends on a router to magnify a signal, it can only stretch a few feet, rather than miles. This means that you are not going to be able to make that network work very far away from the router itself. And when you take into consideration that a small, personal network like that will slow down when more people are connected, you are dealing with a connection that's just not designed to handle that many users.

But with WiMAX, you are talking about a network designed for longevity. The fact is that the towers beaming signals for this new form of wireless are able to hold their own for miles, not feet, and some can stretch as far as 40 miles at present. This means that the network, like the networks responsible for mobile phones, can stretch for miles and miles. And this, of course, means that the signal is going to be reliable no matter where you are. So for business travelers on the road, the only setup involved is turning on your laptop and clicking on your browser icon. There's no finding anything, and no learning how to connect. It's a lot more intuitive, and almost effortless.
