Extended Stay Hotels Vs Hotels for Business Travellers

Extended stay hotels, sometimes called apartment hotels, provide accommodation to those needing to stay in an area for a prolonged period of time, but who do not wish to commit to a residential contract. This includes people on extended business trips, and those who are in the process of relocating to the area. A typical extended stay hotel suite resembles a furnished apartment - with many conveniences not found in standard hotel rooms, such as self-serve kitchen and laundry facilities.

While they are always designed to simulate a home-like environment, you will find the quality of the amenities provided will vary considerably depending on the price. On the more upmarket end of the scale you will find accommodation that combines traditional hotel services (including full room service and a quality location) with the essential features required for an extended stay. Often these features are indistinguishable from those found in a self-contained apartment, offering both privacy and space for the discerning traveller.

The cheaper extended stay hotel options tend to forego the privacy and extra space mentioned above, in favour of shared kitchen and laundry facilities - with your personal accommodation usually consisting of only one or two rooms. Some cheaper options do feature self-contained facilities as well, but these tend to be very limited - such as a hotplate and microwave in place of a full oven. These still offer a great convenience to travellers looking for an extended stay on a budget, and the flexibility offered by the lack of a fixed contract can make up for the less home-like features.

Of course, it's not just the price that determines the quality of accommodations. There are many different markets who take advantage of this type of accommodation, and the features will vary according to the targeted demographic. Business travellers tend to have a different set of requirements to leisure travellers, who in turn have differing needs depending on whether they are families or single people.

Because there is more of a focus on ongoing comfort for those who need accommodations for an extended period of time, rather than accommodation for just a few days, you will find that your options can vary significantly even within the same price range. You should always consider what specific features you would find difficult to live without in your own home when deciding on the best option for your requirements. For instance, it might be easy to forego a conventional oven for a short hotel stay - but would you want to spend an extended period without one?

The good news is that even the most budget options in extended stay hotels will consider the comfort needs of their patrons more than, say, budget motels - as comfort becomes important to everybody when they are facing an extended period in one place. As long as you consider what your needs will actually be, you are bound to find the extended stay accommodation that can meet them within your budget.

Less Stressful Business Travel With Reliable Wireless Internet

So much of business these days depends on the world of communications. Whether you find yourself making deals with companies or associates in faraway lands or simply staying in the loop while you travel for business-related reasons, it is crucial that you are able to have access to the latest technology if you want to excel in your field. And while this can often be accomplished using the various objects in the office, sometimes you need to have something that will travel with you.

For business travelers, nothing has helped with staying in the loop quite like wireless internet has, but at the same time, nothing has caused as much stress late at night, either. The fact about Wi-Fi and the road is that sometimes, your connection will work seamlessly. But for every single time that you are traveling for business and don't need to do anything extra to get online, chances are that you have gone out of your way to handle things a bunch of other times. And this might mean anything from spending a half hour talking to the front desk clerk about resetting a router to driving miles and miles to find a Kinko's open at some ungodly hour. It's simply a difficult thing to find a hotel, business or otherwise, that can actually promise wireless internet that is going to come through every time.

To understand why this is, it is important to actually understand the technology behind wireless. Because you are counting on a small, remote network, you are more likely to experience problems. Think about it like this: you are using a handmade network when you get on with Wi-Fi. Because it is a simple router that is magnifying a signal from a modem, you can only reach so far with the signal. And this means that if you are even just a little bit out of the way, you aren't going to be able to get online. That can cause a lot of frustration, especially if the signal suddenly goes because of the fact that more people got on the network. Wireless internet is also known for getting very slow when multiple parties are sharing the same connection, meaning that you might not be able to do what you need if everyone else in the hotel is online, too.

Enter the advancement of WiMax, which takes the basic concept of wireless and turns it into something far more feasible for business owners and workers alike. With regular wireless, your internet connection is something that is limited to a specific area because the network is coming from one specific location. But with this new form of wireless, the network is national, based on towers that provide signal to all different corners of the country. This means that the very same signal you are working with back in the office can be yours if you open your laptop after a cross-country flight. And this way, you no longer have to worry about whether or not you will be able to get online: with this form of wireless, you are perpetually connected, making your work from anywhere in the country markedly easier.

10 Places for Business Networking When You Have No Time to Network

A phrase that typically follows me around is 'how do you find time to do everything? (The answer is I don't, I just prioritise very well!) But, it left me thinking about how to find the time to network when you have no time to network. I have two pre-school age children, chair of my local CIPD committee, two businesses and a book to write on business networking. That doesn't leave much time for networking...

Here are my 10 ideas on places for business networking when you don't have time to network:

1. Use social occasions to network - recently I met one of my associates via a friend's summer barbeque.

2. Remember to update your LinkedIn status a couple of times a week with what you are up to. (Or if you are really busy, get your PA or VA to update it for you)

3. If you are stuck in a queue, strike up a conversation with the person next to you - you never know where it will lead.

4. On a plane or a train? Talk to the person next to you.

5. Instead of attending all the sessions at a conference, aim to meet some people during the sessions you miss.

6. Invite a couple of people you want to meet to lunch rather than seeing them individually.

7. Regularly host social events for your friends and business contacts.

8. Instead of getting bored at big family events, take the time to find out how your relation's careers and businesses are going.

9. If you are away from home, go down into the bar or restaurant and look for other lone business travellers to talk to.

10. When travelling away from home, look through your business contacts to see who you could meet up with on your travels.

The Differences Between Wireless and WiMAX For Business Travelers

For anyone who has had to hit the road for work-related travel, nothing is quite as urgent as knowing that there is a steady internet connection where you are going. After all, being online is a much faster and more reliable way of connecting back to the office, since you can quickly download the proper files or just check in to make sure that appointments are happening when you were expecting them to. And with the internet while traveling for business, you are also able to just have a generally superior overview of everything that you're doing. Whether it's finding a restaurant to take a client to or talking to your spouse, being online is definitely helpful if you're traveling for business.

While most hotels do have some form of wireless internet available, the fact is that certain options in connectivity are far superior to those that you might find in various boutiques and luxury hotels alike. The biggest trouble with connectivity in hotels is the fact that you have the luck of the draw when it comes to your room's placement. Because distance is a factor when referring to a simple router, sometimes a room that is of a higher quality than one on a lower floor might actually have wireless internet that doesn't work as well, simply because the router signal does not carry that far. And this can mean spending a lot of time figuring out where in the room your laptop picks up a signal, which definitely takes away from the time you could be spending on work or getting in touch with people back home.

That's why knowing about WiMAX and using it as an option makes so much more sense than relying on the free Wi-Fi service around the country. The differences between typical wireless and this new form of wireless are incredibly varied in nature, and are a lot simpler to grasp than you might think. The best way to understand it is to think about the limited power of your Wi-Fi network versus the long-distance capabilities of WiMAX. When you are connected to a network that depends on a router to magnify a signal, it can only stretch a few feet, rather than miles. This means that you are not going to be able to make that network work very far away from the router itself. And when you take into consideration that a small, personal network like that will slow down when more people are connected, you are dealing with a connection that's just not designed to handle that many users.

But with WiMAX, you are talking about a network designed for longevity. The fact is that the towers beaming signals for this new form of wireless are able to hold their own for miles, not feet, and some can stretch as far as 40 miles at present. This means that the network, like the networks responsible for mobile phones, can stretch for miles and miles. And this, of course, means that the signal is going to be reliable no matter where you are. So for business travelers on the road, the only setup involved is turning on your laptop and clicking on your browser icon. There's no finding anything, and no learning how to connect. It's a lot more intuitive, and almost effortless.
